1000 Smiles 2008 Jamaica dental trip was a great success! Great Shape! Inc. again organized over 100 volunteers from all over the USA, Canada and Jamaica. We provided dental work for two weeks each, in the rural communities around Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril. For the 6th year now, with the help of Sandal's Resort, we were able to provide dental work and education to over 18,000 people in Jamaica. There are less than one dentist for every 80,000 people in Jamaica, making dental problems a life threatening issue. Not only do we provide services for helping them with extractions and fillings, but we go into the school's giving each child a toothbrush, maybe the first they have ever owned, then a story and lesson on how and why to take care of your teeth. I have seen the enormous impact our program has had on the island's people. This was my sixth volunteer dental trip to Jamaica and the best yet. Don't forget to check out the photos! Uganda Africa June 2006 This was my first time to visit Africa as well as the first time for a Smile Power dental team. I was lucky enough to spend one month in Uganda, from the big city of Kampala, to the most beautiful sunrise I have ever seen in Maweya, to bungee jumping into the Nile River in Jinja, to standing on the equator, and my favorite area Bwindi. It is known for the mountain gorillas that live in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and for the Batwa pygmy tribe that now live in its outskirts. I wrote a story about my experience that was published in the January 2007 issue of RDH Magazine! Read it now here! World Smiles--Adventures in Uganda
I went to Vietnam and Thailand this year and took over 300 toothbrushes with me. Here are just a few of the cute kids that I met along the way.
